What the hell is ChatGPT?

When I first used ChatGPT in December 2022, I have to admit that my chin was on the floor after making two simple prompts.

ChatGPT is a type of language model known as a “transformer-based neural network.” The search engine’s conversational method, known as ChatGPT, attracted 1 million users in just five days after launch, prompting the oligopoly Google to think about incorporating a more conversational approach into its search engine.

ChatGPT is a powerful AI model that can be fine-tuned for many natural language processing tasks like question answering, language translation, and text completion. It is trained on a massive dataset of text, such as books, articles, and websites, and uses this data to generate human-like text.

GPT stands for “Generative Pre-training Transformer”. I asked ChatGPT what that meant exactly, and then asked it to explain it more simply, so that I could get my brain around it.

“Generative” refers to the model’s ability to generate new text. It means that the model can produce new sentences and paragraphs that are similar to the input text it was trained on.

“Pre-training” means that the model was trained on a large dataset of text before it was fine-tuned for a specific task. This allows the model to…
